An Assessment Of Lending Policies And Practices Of Deposit Money Banks In Nigeria (A Case Study Of Some Selected Banks In Abia State)
ABSTRACT
In this study, an attempt has
been made to look at the lending policies and practices of deposit money banks.
It is well known in Nigeria context that money borrowed are not in most cases
used for the purpose it was borrowed for. Hence, the bank in an attempt to
monitor and if possible control the use of fund incurred, an additional
expenses to the already existing had debts created. Apart from the deposit
money bank to which the historical background to bank lending relates, there
have evolved over the years different types of financial institution which
engaged in lending. The financial institutions like any social institutions do
not operate in vacuum but in a social environment. The environment in which they
operate has certain ideas and objectives which all within its borders are
obliged to work towards achieving. However, the Central bank credit limits its
control and the various statutory pronouncements as related to loans and credit
facilities. Also, the method used in gathering data and its application to
various loans and advances shall be highlighted. Furthermore, the selected
banks would be used as a case study and from the findings, recommendations are
made to improve on lending policies and practices of deposit money banks to
achieve its effectiveness and efficiency operations in the economy.
