ABSTRACT

The removal of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions using elephant grass

was studied using batch adsorption process. Reaction conditions such as the effect of particle

size, adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and temperature were

evaluated. The results obtained indicated that the amount of metal ions adsorbed decreased

with increase in particle size of the adsorbent. The amount of metal ions adsorbed was also

found to increase with increase in dosage of adsorbent and the trend of adsorption follows the

order: Pb(II) > Cr(VI) > Cd(II). The adsorption process was found to be pH dependent and

the results obtained indicate that the optimum pH for the sorption of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(VI)

were 7.0, 6.0 and 6.0 respectively. The rate of adsorption was also found to increase with

increase in the contact time. Application of pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order

models as well as intraparticle diffusion model to the adsorption data indicated that the

adsorption data followed pseudo-second order kinetics. Adsorption characteristics of the

adsorbent were investigated by fitting data into different equilibrium adsorption models viz:

Langmuir, Freundlich, Flory-Huggins and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. and the result

showed that Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherm best describe the adsorption data.

Hence, the mechanism of physical adsorption was proposed. Also thermodynamic

considerations indicated that the adsorption is endothermic, spontaneous and progressed with

increasing degree of orderliness.
