ABSTRACT
Application of chrysobalanus icaco shell for the
removal of an anionic dyes, tartrazine and sunset yellow from aqueous solution
by batch adsorption experiment were investigated. The adsorption capacity ofthe
adsorbent was determined. Effect of pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, contact
time and initial concentration were determined. The result showed that the
optimum adsorption was attained at pH 1 for tartrazine dye and pH 2 for sunset
yellow dye, adsorption equilibrium was attained at 120mins.The adsorption
capacity increases with increase in initial concentration of 30mg/L to 150mg/L
oftartrazine from 5.97mg/g to 23.40mg/g and sunset yellow from 4.05mg/g to
19.65mg/g. The equilibrium adsorption oftartrazine dye and sunset yellow dye on
adsorbent was analyzed by Langmuir (R2) values: 0.874 and 0.527, Freundlich
(R2) values: 0.896 and 0.759, Temkin (R2) values: 0.747 and 0.901 and Dubinin
(R2) values: 0.660 and 0.984. The results indicate that the Freundlich isotherm
(R2 = 0.896) provide the best correlation for tartrazine dye and Dubinin
isotherm provide the best correlation for Sunset Yellow dye (R2 = 0.984). The
kinetic model of tartrazine dye and sunset yellow dye on adsorbent was analyzed
by Pseudo - first order (R2) values: 0.952 and 0.174, Pseudo-second order (R2)
values: 0.997 and 0.955, Intraparticle diffusion (R2) values: 0.924 and 0.164
and Liquid film diffusion (R2) values: 0.952 and 0.174. The results of the
kinetic study showed that the adsorption process was better described by the
Pseudo-second order model with the coefficient of determination (R2) values of
0.997 and 0.955 indicating chemisorption mechanism
