ABSTRACT
Metallic objects form an essential object for humans ail(l because of this Scientists have attempted to understand and control the corrosion of metals from imieej)tioil of lime use of imietal objects Metals and ilmeim alloys ate exposed to aclR)ii of acids in industry during j)FOCCSSCS such as acid pickling, cleaning, mescaling and oil well draining (Abdallab, 2002, 2004a,b; Ashassm-sorkhabi and Ghalebsaolz-Jeddi, 2005; Asliassi-Sorkhabi cl a/, 2005; Chetouani cial 2004; Dadgernezhad, 2004; Noo 2007; PopoVu / a!, 2003), Corrosion InVOlVeS the deterioration or degradation of' metal: it is a destiuclive attack ol',iuetal by its environuient, corrosion immlmibmlois arc generally used to pioleel metals against detenoration From corrosion (Mmii ka and l)mmhey. 2005a.h). ( 'oriosion is an elect rocheuiical proces.s wh icli LlIC8llY occurs in the piesetice of oxygen (( )), moisture an(l Li(lllC011S electrolyte solution Oxidation octiirs at the aiiodic iie ;uul reduction occurs at cathodic site. Physm'cal strains (scraiches. den Is, bends etc.) on tine mon are moore easily omdiied ihain oilier ameas, Ilmis directly ielates to lime way electric liel(Is are generated at the surface of the metal, stronger lields are generated at the physically strained parts of the metal. The result is that these regions arc anodic (oxidation occurs) amid simultaneously different areas arc cathodic regions at which a reduction take place (usually of 02), when this occurs, Fe atom gives up two elections to lbrm the Fe' ion. Fe(s) = Fe2 ' (aq) + 2c (I. I The electrons that are released during the reaction (equation I . I) flow through the i ion metal to the cathodic region according to eq. I .2 02 (aq) + 21120 (I) 4011 (aq) (I 2) Combination of equation 1 1 and 1.2 gives equation (1.3) Fe (s) 1/2 0, (g) (11,0 Fc'' (aq) I 2011 (I .1) l"c"' (s) is Ilittlier oxidii.ed to Fe'', iii non (iii) Oxide coIIIftwhId 4Fc2' (aq) -I- 0, (g) + 41(20 (s) = 2Fc203(s) + 811' (aq) '(I 4) Corrosion of metal is a major industrial problem that has attracted investigation md ehes (Abiola el a/,, 2004; Agrawal el a!, 2(X). , Aio;; el at., 2007 Ash;issi- Sorkhabi and (ihalebzaza,2005; Ashassi- Sorkhabi ci til 2.005a,b,c, 2004, (laik and Varncy,1987; Collins c( a!, 1993; Ekpe ci al., 1994; Kumar,2008; Muraldhai'an ci' al.,2000; Umoren arid Ebenso, 2008a ; Un'ioren ci' al., 2008a,b, 2006a-f'). The cost of restoring damages due to corrosion in US industries and the American Public was estimated at $170 billion per year in 1991 arid at $ I 379 billion in 1998 (Urown, l999 Wan liii ci a/., 2005). In Uk, the annual cost of losses due to corrosion was also estimated at four million dollars ($4 million) as at I97I(Department of Trade and Industry, I 971) while it is likely to be less in Nigeria like in Funman fruit juice industry and Fan milk industry where 5l, 266, 666.67 and N40, 075, 883.66 respectively are the cost of' reslori rig corrosion (Paul 2002). An advancement in technology and utiliztion of' metals increases the cost of corrosion.
