ABSTRACT
This study investigated the adoption of \Tetiver grass (Vertiveria Zizanioides)
as soil conservation practice by Farmers in Aguata Agricultural Zone of Anambra
State. The main objective was to determine the level of adoption of Vetiver as soil
conservation practice. Primary data were collected through structured
questionnaire administered to 120 farmers randomly selected from 12 circles while
Secondary Data were collected from Agricultural Development Programme (ADP)
Zonal and State Offices, extension workers, periodicals and journals. The data
collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency and percentages),
adoption model (AJETA) and multiple regressions. Results show that the adoption
package of the tecimology was below average with a mean adoption score of 2.94.
Use of Vetiver for ornamental / medicinal purposes and observation of proper
trimming period (Hedge formation) were mostly adopted by farmers with 72.5%
and 60% adopters respectively. This implied that most adopters of Vetiver in the
area were using it for purposes other than erosion control. More than half 62.5% of
the farmers in the study area fell within the age bracket of 41 — 60 years with about
80% of them having formal education. The average household size was 6 and
45.83% belonged to cooperative societies. The majority of the respondents were
male (71.66%) while only 28.33% were females. The correlation and regression
analyses showed that adoption of vetiver grass increased with educational level,
household size, membership of cooperative and decreased with farming
experience. High cost of fertilizer (44.17%), inadequate information (19.17%),
Scarcity of the plant (Vetiver) (13.33%), lack of incentives (11.67%), land tenure
problem (6.67%) and negative societal perception about the grass (5%) were some
of the problems affecting the adoption of vetiver in the study area. Based on the
findings, it was recommended that the extension / farmer contact in the area should
be improved, farmers should be encouraged to form or join cooperatives,
government to devote more funds to input subsidy and creation of more awareness
to farmers about vetiver and its erosion control capabilities. Finally, government
should establish vetiver multiplication centres in strategic localities for easy access
to farmers.
