ABSTRACT

The study investigated the attributes of livestock farmers in Ohafla Local Government Area of Abia State in relation to their attributes to the technological options available to them. Demographic attributes and production technologies as well as constraints to adoption were investigated using descriptive statistics. Factors affecting adoption were investigated using logistic regression while technologies adopted were measured using 5-scale point method of analysis. The technologies considered include breeding — which revealed that 100% of the farmers adopted no breeding technology; feed and nutrition — which showed that 25% of farmers adopted moderately; health — which also showed that 10% of the farmers adopted moderately; and management technologies which was moderately appreciated by less than 5% of the farmers. The overall result of the various investigations revealed that the adoption of modern technologies by livestock farmers in Ohafia Local Government Area is pathetically low. The study also revealed that productivity is directly dependent on adoption of modern technologies. It is therefore obvious that if food and nutritional security, income generation, employment and contribution to foreign exchange are desired to be achieved and sustained, adoption of livestock production technologies must be embraced. More efforts should be directed towards the enlightenment of the people over the available technologies for animal production. Researchers should focus on cheap and reliable technologies that would be available for small scale farmers like those in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
