ABSTRACT
The study investigated the level of
adoption of improved agricultural technologies transmitted through the radio
farm broadcast in Imo State. One hundred and forty completed interview
schedules from farmers were analyzed using percentages. frequencies, classical
adoption model and multiple regressions. Twelve out of twenty nine transmitted
improved Agricultural technologies listed were widely adopted by the fanners.
The technologies with their mean adoption scores were in these order
fertilizers and its application (5.68), cropping system technologies (5.43),
site selection and land preparation (5.21), production of garden egg (5.20),
weed and weed control (5.18), dry season vegetable production (4.86), yam
minisett production (4.51), agricultural formation and management (4.33),
practical steps towards broiler re-stocking for Christmas (4.30), bush burning
a menace to agriculture (4.21), the importance of vegetables in our diet (4.20)
and housing of goats and sheep (3.98), out of a maximum of 6.0.The value of
coefficient of multiple determination (0.16) indicates that 16.3% of the
variation in the dependent variable (adoption of agricultural technologies) is
explained by the variations in the explanatory variables (socio-econornic
characteristics of the farmers). Membership of cooperative society and level of
formal education are all highly significant determinants of adoption. Irregular
electric supply was identified as the most pressing problem hindering adoption
of technologies transmitted through the radio, It was recommended that farmers should
be encouraged to be members of cooperative society among others.
