ABSTRACT
This study examined
the adoption of fisheries technology by t farmers in Imo State. A total of 82
farmers who engaged in fishery production were randomly selected from the three
agricultural zones of Imo State namely Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe. Data collected
were analyzed with the use of descriptive statistics such as frequencies, means
and percentages. Mean adoption scores as well as Ordinary Least Square (OLS)
multiple regression analysis Results indicate that majority of the respondents
fall within the age range 40-49year5 which is the active working population
age. Majority of the respondents were educated with about 33% having tertiary
education. Their occupation was mainly avil service and farming. Findings also
showed that the level of adoption was only fair at 205 Mean Score Profitability
and interest were the major reasons for adoption while cost of production and
lack of awareness of the technology were the most limiting factors to adoption
In addition, extension agents were found to be the major source of information
on the technology. Multiple regression analysis showed source of information,
use of extension demonstration center and attendance to organization meetings
to be positively and significantly associated with its adoption, while age and
contact with extension agent showed negative but significant relationship with
adoption. It was recommended that extension works be strengthened to improve
adoption. Extension Demonstration Centres should be provided within the reach
of farmers especially in places where adoption is very low. Government should
also encourage farmers by subsidizing their cost of production by providing
fingerlings at cheaper rates.
