ABSTRACT

This study examined accountability and transparency in the Nigerian public sector. A study of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. The data were obtained from questionnaire administration to the various staff of the institution. The hypotheses used in the research were tested using ANOVA statistical tool. Also, data collected were subjected to analysis and the findings formed the 1 conclusion reached in the study. The following were revealed as findings, that poor accountability and transparency in public sector is caused by non-challant attitude of anti-government agencies. That poor internal control in Nigeria public sector does not hinder accountability and transparency. That irregular financial examination of account does not affects the accountability and transparency. That the cause of poor accountability and transparency in Nigeria public sector includes level of poverty and irregular payment. Based on the results, discussions and conclusion drawn so far, the researcher made the following recommendations, the anti-government agencies should as a matter of urgency in testified their effort in bringing to book the offenders of accountability and transparency in the execution of their duties. Adequate internal control in Nigeria public sector should be enhance by employing qualified people to checkmate the activities of others. Regular financial examination of account should be made often in the public sector. The government on their parts should provide the enabling environment, regular salary payment, bonus and other incentives to the civil- servants. This will minimized poor accountability and transparency in Nigeria public sector. Finally stiffer punishment should be made on the offender of accountability and transparency to serve as a deterrant to others
