ABSTRACT
A 12 week study was conducted to compare the growth performance of F2hybrids obtained from the mating of F1normal local and frizzle x Arbor acre breeder stock in the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Research and Teaching Farm, Umudike. Daily feed consumption, weekly weight gains and linear body measurements were determined. From the results of the study F2 frizzle individuals at 12 weeks consumed significantly (P<O.05) more feed than the normal feathered individuals. Feed intake was 1 66.42g/bird and 159.3 1 g/bird for the frizzle and normal feathered birds respectively. The frizzles had lower values of feed conversion ratio and percentage mortality than their normal feathered counterparts. Among the two genotypes, the frizzles showed superiority in final body weights with a mean body weight of 1376.67g compared to 1309.00g for the normal feathered birds. It was obvious that the frizzle hybrids which are known to have greater efficiency in thermoregulation due to their curled and exposed plumage, appear to be more adapted to the humid tropical environment.
